The Lie That Your Value Depends on Approval
Jul 02, 2026The Lie That Your Value Depends on Approval
"Before anyone applauded you, rejected you, or misunderstood you, God had already established your worth."
There are lies that scream.
And then there are lies that whisper.
The most dangerous lies are often the quiet ones—the ones we've believed for so long that they begin to sound like our own thoughts.
One of those lies shaped much of my life.
That my value depended on approval.
Not just the approval of the world.
The approval of friends.
Family.
The church.
Social media.
People I loved.
People I barely knew.
I believed that if people were pleased with me, I had worth. If they were disappointed in me, misunderstood me, or rejected me, something must be wrong with me.
Maybe you've felt that too.
You overthink conversations.
You replay interactions.
You constantly wonder if you've done enough.
You adjust yourself to keep the peace.
You shrink so others stay comfortable.
It feels normal.
But it's bondage.
Approval Was Never Meant to Carry Your Identity
When our identity is built on people's opinions, we place an impossible weight on people.
People change.
Their emotions change.
Their opinions change.
Their expectations change.
One day they celebrate you.
The next day they criticize you.
If your identity rises and falls with their approval, you'll spend your entire life on unstable ground.
Jesus said that a wise person builds their house on rock—not sand.
Approval is sand.
God's Word is the Rock.
The World and Religion Can Tell the Same Lie
Culture says your value comes from being admired.
Sometimes religion quietly teaches your value comes from staying small.
One tells women to perform.
The other sometimes teaches women to disappear.
Neither message reflects the heart of God.
Your identity was never meant to be built on attention or invisibility.
It was meant to be built on Christ.
Hosea Shows Us God's Heart
Everything changed for me when I studied Hosea 2.
God doesn't pursue His people because they've earned His affection.
He pursues them because He has chosen covenant.
He says,
"I will allure her... I will bring her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her."
Then He declares,
"I will betroth you to Me forever."
Not until you become perfect.
Not until everyone approves of you.
Forever.
That changed everything for me.
I realized I wasn't striving to earn God's love.
I was learning to receive what He had already established.
Jezreel Means "God Will Sow"
When God revealed the meaning of Jezreel to me, something shifted.
God doesn't simply rescue His daughters.
He sows them.
He plants them with intention.
He grows fruit through them.
He calls them into purpose.
But before He plants something new, He often asks us to surrender what we've been clinging to.
For many women, that's approval.
Validation.
Performance.
Control.
Those things cannot produce what only the Holy Spirit can.
Freedom Begins with One Question
Whose voice has been defining your identity?
The opinions of people?
Past wounds?
Your own inner critic?
Or the God who created you?
The voices around us are loud.
But only One voice has the authority to tell you who you are.
